the marathon

he laid down to rest
the marathon tomorrow
miles behind him
shoes ready
all he needed was rest
a restful night
would ensure victory
it would tie those miles together
and wrap them in a bow
put them in a clean box
ready to be opened tomorrow
but a restful night did not come
because they were in the way-
the thoughts and dreams of the marathon
