peak

i couldn't reach the peak
can you blame me?
between work
and family
i already have mountains to climb
but i decided to climb this one
and i ran out of breath
i got so, so tired
i tried to press on
but burning stars filled my vision
as they emerged in the sky
i woke up in the dirt
and i thought to myself
trying to reach this peak
just might kill me
and i have to account for
descending the mountain
if i had just reached the peak
i wonder how far
i could have seen
perhaps i could press on
and never descend
