dinosaurs

when i was little
i loved dinosaurs
tyrannosaurus was terrifying
i thought triceratops 
might win a fight with one
velociraptors small and speedy
hunting in the tall grass
apatosaurus
who i learned as brontosaurus
i guess they changed that
or maybe cleared it up
for the children
the children who love dinosaurs
like i did
i think stegosaurus
was my favorite
something about the peaceful nature
of the stegos
that drew me
when i went home from school
and told everyone
how much i loved dinosaurs
they were so excited for me
dinosaurs are so cool
dinosaurs are so great
my mom even bought me
a plastic stegosaurus 
but it didn't take long
before dinosaurs weren’t cool
and dinosaurs weren’t great
they haven’t been around here
for literally ages
they might as well
be basilisks
or carbuncles
sometimes i wish
we needed more paleontologists
