delegate

delegate

i once was the nation’s delegate
i dressed like one
i wore venetian loafers
i was respected
i traveled the world
i promised hope and peaceand when the nation went to war
i didn’t know what to say
you no longer have much to say they said
you promised us hope they said
you promised us peace they said
what kind of delegate are you they asked
and so i lost my title
and so i am no longer a delegate
and so i came back home
and so i dress normally
my daughter got married
her husband works in lumber
i needed shoes for the wedding
so i wore the loafers
your daughter is beautiful they said
you have a wonderful family they said
if i dance anymore, my feet might fall off they said
i don’t think they knew i was once the nation’s delegate
i didn’t feel the need to tell them
